The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Proudly Supports Alex Padilla for Appointment to the U.S. Senate Seat Vacated By Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris in California

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) submitted an official letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom to express support for California Secretary of State Alex Padilla for consideration to be nominated and appointed to California’s United States Senatorial Seat as Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris moves forward into the White House to serve in the Biden Administration.

This recent vacancy will be filled via an appointment from the Governor, per California law.

“Secretary Padilla is a true statesman serving the citizens of California with excellence and delivering a better quality of life with integrity,” said Ramiro A. Cavazos, President & CEO, USHCC. “We are proud to support his appointment.”

Secretary Padilla is a son of immigrants from Mexico raised in the working-class community of Pacoima, California who attended local public schools and went on to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Since being elected to the Los Angeles City Council at the age of 26, Secretary Padilla has demonstrated a strong commitment to the economic and community development of the Hispanic and low-income communities. He was the first Latino to serve as President of the Los Angeles City Council. There has never been a Latino or Latina U.S. Senator in California, despite Latinos making up more than 38% of the state population, according to U.S. Census data.

The USHCC actively supports the appointment of Hispanic candidates who are willing and ready to serve the country. The USHCC promotes the economic growth, development and interests of more than 4.7 million Hispanic-owned businesses that aggregately contribute over $800 billion to the American economy every year. The USHCC also serves as a platform for our nationwide network of more than 260 local Hispanic chambers of commerce.

The Hispanic demographic accounts for approximately 20% of all Americans. However, in our modern history there has never been equitable representation in the United States Congress or in other key political appointments. This is a unique opportunity to create a systemic paradigm shift of inclusion and equality in Congress.

“Voices of diversity, especially Hispanics who account for 61 million of the U.S. population, will only help to effectuate the change needed to improve quality of life and ensure economic vitality for all Californians and Americans. We need leaders that reflect the diversity of America,” added Cavazos.
